Who We Are:

Founded in 2005, Holyoke Community Charter School (HCCS) offers a high-quality public education in grades PreK-8th. The school mission is to promote the joy of learning and to prepare children for success as students, citizens, and workers by providing them with a high-quality public education. Having recently completed a comprehensive strategic and academic plan, HCCS teachers are driven to support diverse learners through a multitude of ways to present content and assess performance. Moreover, HCCS recently completed construction of a new 22,000 sq. ft. wing, adding four new classrooms and a new 16,000 sq. ft. gymnasium. HCCS is raising the bar for what’s possible.

Positional Purpose:

The School Nurse facilitates a positive environment for the natural development of HCCS students, in a manner that contributes to their case, growth, and development. They promote health and safetyfor all students in the school. Intervene with actual and potential health concernsand provides case management services. The School Nurse actively collaborates with othersto build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning. They ensure the school and SABIS® philosophy, brand, systems, policies, and proceduresare properly implemented and observed.

Key Responsibilities:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Health Care:

  • Provides direct healthcare to students who have been injured or who present with acute or chronic illnesses
  • Responsible for medication administration and the performance of healthcare procedure within the scope of nursing practice and are ordered by a licensed practitioner/provider;
  • Maintains updated records of student medications;
  • Ensures classrooms, office areas, and other appropriate areas of the building are equipped with first aid kits;
  • Serves as a liaison for school personnel, family, community, and healthcare providers;
  • Participates as the health expert on Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and 504 teams;
  • Communicates with the family through direct personal contact, telephone calls, and written communications as appropriate.

Healthy School Environment:

  • Promotes a healthy school environment;
  • Monitors immunizations and assures appropriate exclusion from and re-entry into school, and reports communicable disease as required by law and/or school policies;
  • Provides leadership in implementing precautions for blood borne pathogens and other infectious diseases;
  • Maintains accurate immunization records of students, contacts parents as needed to update records, reports timely as required by local, state, and/or federal regulations.
  • Promotes health education by providing health information directly to students, individually and in groups, parents, staff, and as needed or required, to the community;
  • Communicates with staff members who have contact with students who have documented medical conditions;
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality within communications regarding specific student medical conditions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university
  • In Massachusetts: Hold a valid license as a Registered Nurse (RN), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), and/or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
  • Minimum two (2) years clinical experience in child health, community health or other relevant clinical nursing experience, preferably in a school;
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid certification;
  • Current driver’s licenses, for self-transportation to complete nursing assignments;
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of child growth and development, community health and social service resources, as well as current health and community issues;
  • Participates in ongoing professional development as needed to maintain state licensure.

Typical hours are 7:45am – 3:20pm, with twice/month Wednesday staff meetings until 4:30pm. This position begins Academic Year 2024-2025 (Mid-August 2024).
